STEF ber att få tacka alla Sveriges golfare som genom sitt deltagande i Spela & vinn har hjälpt till att ge fler barn i Sydafrika möjlighet att lära sig läsa, räkna och skriva.
Vi vill också tacka de golfklubbar som aktivt sett till att sprida budskapet om spelavinn och på så sätt fått fler spelare att krydda sin golfrunda med denna insats.
Den 14 september spelades finalspelet på Kyssinges fina anläggning norr om Stockholm i ett strålande höstväder.
Ett 50-tal deltagare njöt av solen, kamratskapet och den fina stämningen och ett dignande prisbord, möjliggjort av många generösa sponsorer, utgjorde en extra krydda.
Från STEF (och barnen i Sydafrika) vill vi tacka alla som bidragit: spelare, klubbledningar, ledningen för Kyssinge GK och inte minst alla sponsorer.

Svenska Fotbollförbundet (SvFF) har beslutat att under förberedelserna inför VM i Sydafrika 2010 stödja den svenska idrottslegenden Sven Tumba i hans arbete att ge utsatta barn en bättre start i livet genom att få möjlighet till en skolutbildning.
Sven Tumba är helhjärtat engagerad i arbetet med Sven Tumba Education Fund (STEF), som hittills har kunnat införa sitt utbildningsprogram vid fem olika skolor i Sydafrika. Konceptet bygger på att använda sporten, framförallt fotboll, som en katalysator för att lära barnen läsa, skriva och räkna - kunskaper som vi i Sverige oftast tar för givna!
I samband med 2008 och 2009 års VM-kvalmatcher hemma i Sverige, närmast onsdag den 10 september mot Ungern och senare lördagen den 11 oktober mot Portugal, skänker SvFF en krona per åskådare till STEF. Med detta ekonomiska stöd hoppas vi att ännu fler barn ska få tillgång till grundläggande utbildning och ett bättre liv.
”Fotbollen berör hela Sydafrika och därför är jag extra glad över det här samarbetet. Det vore underbart om Råsunda kunde fyllas och genom detta ge vårt skolprojektet ett bra bidrag och dessutom skapa goda förutsättningar för vårt landslag att ta sig till VM i Sydafrika 2010” säger Sven Tumba, landslagsspelare i såväl fotboll som ishockey.

IDOL 2008 jurymedlemmen Andreas Karlsson har skrivit Sport For Educations nya ledmotiv ”All I need is you”. Andreas har skrivit musik åt flertalet världskända artister. Han har även skrivit två av vinnarlåtarna till programmets amerikanska motsvarighet American Idol.

Det övergripande målet för Sven Tumba Education Fund är att förbättra kvalitén på den grundläggande utbildningen i utvalda skolorna genom att utveckla läsoch skrivkunnighet, utveckla hälso- och levnadsförmågan, och genom att använda idrott som en utlösande faktor i processen. Under augusti månad har matematik varit i fokus på Nomfihela skolan. Organisationen Math Centre for Professionals (MCPT) har utbildat och tränat lärare vid Nomfihela i matematiska kunskaper. Målet har varit att ge lärare rätt förutsättningar för att i sin tur lära eleverna baskunskaper i matematik. Matematik är en utav de stora utmaningarna för alla skolor i sydafrika, men med hjälp från MCPT får elever vid Nomfihela en bra start. Lärare vid Nomfihela for kontinuerlig träning och uppföljning sker på veckobasis. Denna process gör det möjligt för Sven Tumba Education Fund att följd barnens utveckling
inom matematik. Resultatet har varit mycket positivt så här långt, men har även visat att mycket arbete kvarstår. Tack vare Sven Tumba Education Fund får de 675 eleverna vid Nomfihela skolan en bättre start i livet genom att erhålla baskunskaper inom matematik.

Sport For Education deltog vid SAS MASTERS I golf på Arlanda Stad.
SAS MASTERS är den största årliga idrottshändelsen i skandinavien.
Sport For Education informerade publik och företag om organisationen, dessa aktiviteter och mål. Tävlingen var en succé för organisation då många nya och värdefulla kontakter skapades.

9 juni 2008 gick det årliga golftävlingen TUMBA MIX av stapeln. Tävlingen hölls på Ullna golfklubb som är belägen strax utanför centrala Stockholm. Banan skapades av Sven Tumba 1981. TUMBA MIX är en kändisgolftävling där även företag medverkar. I år var startfältet fyllt med några av sveriges största kändisar, bland annat Peter Forsberg, Ingemar Stenmark och Börje Salming. Innan tävling så kunde deltagare lägga ett bud sin favoritkändis och få denne som spelpartner. Intäkterna från budgivningen gick oavkortat till Sven Tumba Education Fund.

STEF´s fotbollsprogram fortlöper med start juli 2008. En fotbollsliga mellan
de fem skolor som är involverade i STEF kommer att löpa under året. Lagen
skall mötas minst två gånger under året. Fotbollsligan kommer att skötas av
en sportkommité bestående av representanter från varje skola. Kommitén
kommer ansvara bland annat för att matcher spelas enligt schema samt arbeta
för att engagera barnen i idrottsaktiviteterna.

STEF’s main focus is to bring literacy and numeracy to vulnerable children throughout the world by promoting education through sport as the catalyst for lasting change.
Through the Soccer for Success Programme, a literacy and soccer development programme, STEF is able to touch and improve the lives of approximately 4000 children and 100 teachers in 5 primary schools in Kwa-Ximba. The schools are Mabhila, Insimangwe, Ntukuso, Ngidi and Nomfihlela. STEF provided all the kit and equipment for the learners as well as training of the teachers in coaching, referring and soccer administration.
The first tournament featuring the five schools was held on the 24th April 2008 at Manzwelwandle Stadium in Cato Ridge. The tournament was a huge success and attracted support from the community all enthusiastic about the event and already looking forward to future events.
Mabhila Primary School was the champion of the day, taking home 2 out of the 4 trophies on offer. Nomfihlela won the trophy for under 15 boys and Ntukuso took the last trophy. It was indeed heart-warming and humbling to see the children give it their all on the pitch reminding one once again of how little can make a huge difference.

STEF har nyligen startat sportprogrammet, Soccer for Success. Programmet som involverar 4000 barn och 100 lärare i fem skolor (KwaXimba) skall kombinera läs och skrivkunskap med fotboll. Målet är att bygga upp en fotbollsliga med alla deltagande skolor.

STEF kan stolt presentera Gary Player som ny internationell golfambassadör för fonden. Gary är en av golfens allra största levande legender. Han är den mest framgångsrike internationella golfspelaren någonsin. -Jag är oerhört stolt att Gary Player har valt att ambassadör för fonden och hoppas att fler följer hans exempel, säger fondens grundare Sven Tumba.

STEF kommer att starta 13 nya program i skolor i KwaXimba distriktet. Under 2007 startades de första programmen på fem skolor i KwaXimba distriktet. Resultatet har varit mycket positivt och de nya programmen kommer använda sig av liknande modell för att hjälpa barn att läsa och skriva.

Optikföretaget KlarSynt utökar sitt stöd till Sven Tumba Education Fund. Under 2008 kommer företaget att genomföra insamlingar i butikerna samt sända minst fyra legitimerade optiker till Syd Afrika för att genomföra synundersökningar och förse barn i behov med glasögon.Aktiviteten går ut på att de 143 optikerbutiker som anslutna till KlarSynt skall donera pengar baserat på sin försäljning samt uppmuntra sina konsumenter till att bidra till fonden. KlarSynt har följt Sven Tumbas fond och dess snabba utveckling sedan starten. Vi är mycket imponerade av att man på ett år nått en 30-procentig förbättring på den första skolan. Vi ser stödet som en del av vårt sociala ansvar samtidigt som det ger goodwill och en stark solidaritetskänsla bland våra medlemsbutiker och samarbetspartners, kommenterar Anders Åhrlin, VD KlarSynt.

Naming of STEF Soccer Development Programmes:
AstraZeneca Launches Competition to Find a Winner!
The Sven Tumba Education Fund (STEF) philosophy encourages the participation of all children in sport – in fact it’s one of the four fundamental pillars that make up the STEF model. This month AstraZeneca and STEF announced that five-aside-soccer has been selected as the key sport to be implemented in STEF beneficiary schools. A naming game has been launched with the confirmation of this selection, and both AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals and Nomfihlela Primary School have been roped into coming up with a South African equivalent for FUTSAL. The name that scores the most points with the judges will be adopted as the official name for soccer development programmes for all STEF beneficiary schools.
Speaking at the launch of the “What’s in Name?” competition, AstraZeneca transformation manager and custodian of the local STEF project, Buhle Moyo, said that the sporting programme is more than just exercise and will be used to identify and develop soccer talent in young children, encourage participation of all children in sport and it’s expected to help leverage other elements of the model, specifically literacy. “It is also hoped that the success of the programme will see it being scaled-up and taken to other schools within the in Kwa-Ximba district in Natal, via an inter-schools league.”
For strategic reasons that support the STEF objectives, FUTSAL has been selected over traditional soccer. This because the players enjoy more ball contact per game; it encourages better ball control; can improve motor ability, perception, and problem solving abilities; it’s more fun and the children can score more goals; and it gives the players a sense of belonging to and identifying with a team. All of which are important factors in the well-rounded development of children.
September sees the roll-out of training programmes aimed at 15 teachers at Nomfihlela Primary and four other schools in the area. They will all be exposed to soccer coaching, and refereeing, as well as training in administration of the game. It is hoped that this will mark the kick-off of the intra-school leagues within the five schools, with January pegged for the launch of the inter-schools league.
The STEF is a combination remedy to create lasting change in the lives of vulnerable children and uses a model structured around four fundamental pillars to ensure significant impact on a sustained basis. These four pillars include support in literacy and numeracy; sport; capacity building; and infrastructure upgrades. To date, progress has been made in developing several of these pillars, with baseline literacy and numeracy assessments completed, a new classroom opened and the pillar now receiving heightened attention through the roll-out of five-aside-soccer: sports development.

But for the pupils enrolled at Nomfihlela Primary School in Kwa-Ximba, education is a matter of being afforded a brighter future, idyllically housed within a newly built classroom. |
It is estimated that some 10 000 to 12 000 classrooms are required to meet the current education needs in KwaZulu-Natal. Government is unable to address this burgeoning requirement within the budgetary constraints and as a result, many communities without local donors are finding themselves in dire crisis.
Situated approximately 60km north of Durban, Nomfihlela Primary School marks the inaugural implementation of a partnership between Swedish sports icon, Sven Tumba and pharmaceutical AstraZeneca, the Sven Tumba Education Fund (STEF), launched at the International Conference Centre in Durban, November 2006.
Aside from building classrooms to house eager learners, AstraZeneca and the STEF’s primary aim is to develop a student support model for children in the foundation stage of schooling, namely grades 0-3. The partnership’s vision is to adapt an approach that will develop literacy, basic numeracy, skills and the participation in sport to re-enforce discipline and build character.
The 72 square metre classroom took four-weeks to complete and is situated 30-metres from the main entrance to the school. As per the explicit wishes of the fund, the project was undertaken by Mr LG Mhlongo, a contracted builder from PROJECT BUILD, a Natal Schools Project Trust. Established in 1995 as an offshoot of the Urban Foundation’s school building division, it is PROJECT BUILD’S aims to improve the pupil / classroom ratio, thereby creating improved conditions for teaching staff and children alike.
Assisted by his team of four, as well as two members of the community, it was the STEF’s intension to not only provide much needed employment for the six individuals, but also to transfer a number of valuable building skills to the two members of the community. These included bricklaying, concrete mixing, roofing, plastering and painting.

READ tests levels prowess of students enrolled in the first project of the Sven Tumba Education Fund
The READ Educational Trust recently evaluated the literacy capabilities of 60 pupils at Nomfihlela Primary School in Kwa-Ximba, Natal, with challenging results. The average literacy percentage posted was 22 percent among the first three grades of the school. The assessments are the first steps in the Sven Tumba Education Fund (STEF) programme being rolled out at the school.
The STEF aims to develop a student support model for children in the foundation stage of schooling, namely grades 0-3. Its vision is to adapt an approach that will develop literacy, basic numeracy, skills and the participation in sport to re-enforce discipline and build character.
Says Nombulelo Sikhosana, READ co-ordinator president, “We randomly selected students from grades one to three and sat with each child over a three-day period to conduct our one-on-one literacy test. For grade one and two, each test was performed twice, once in the child’s home language, IsiZulu and the second test was conducted in English. The grade three tests were only in English and included one reading comprehension (where the answers were either choosing the correct answer or writing their own sentence); spelling and word lists.”
As to be expected, the English literacy rates were the poorest across all three grades, the lowest being that of the grade ones at a mere six percent. Quite surprisingly, the highest IsiZulu literacy results were garnered from the grade two pupils at a staggering 90 percent. Numeracy tests will follow later this year, with the same literacy tests to be completed with the same pupil base within the following 12-months in order to gauge the reading progress of the group.

The STEF research team is currently evaluating the location and group selection for the STEF Pilot Program. Considerations are focused on the following areas:
The STEF pilot is scheduled to begin in January 2007 with the start of the school year. Preparations are well under way and Sven Tumba (STEF Founder) and Per Larsson are scheduled for an initial visit to South Africa during the first week of September to ascertain the progress to date in preparation for commencement of the pilot next year. The official inauguration is scheduled for November 19, 2006 at the International Convention Center in Durban, South Africa. Representatives from many of STEF's associating organizations and partners will attend the ceremony.

The Sven Tumba Education Fund has been launched and is registered in Florida, USA. The first pilot program is ready for implementation and will be introduced in November 2006 in Kwa-Zulu Natal in South Africa. The model will then be completed and ready for implementation in time for the start of the new school year. More information will follow.
